iFixit plans to start selling replacement parts for the Steam Deck this summer, according to Kevin Purdy. The repair experts at iFixit will be one of the authorized sellers of replacement parts, but they did not give a specific time frame as to when they would be available. The majority of consoles aren't easy to repair, so making official Steam Deck replacement parts available is a good thing for consumers. Hopefully, it will push other hardware makers to do the same.

We asked iFixit if it could give us information about which parts you'll be able to get and how much they'll cost. In Valve's official Steam Deck video from October, the company said thumbsticks, SSDs, and possibly more would be available, so it's possible those will be listed at iFixit.

Valve has strongly cautioned against opening the Steam Deck

Even though it's your PC, or it will be once you've received your Steam Deck, Valve strongly cautioned against opening up a Steam Deck.

It felt like there was an urgent need for replacement parts when a few of the first Steam Deck owners reported seeing thumbstick drift, a problem best known to happen with some Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. Fortunately, Valve said that the drift was a software bug and that it would be fixed within hours. The people who had been experiencing drift told The Verge that the update looked to have fixed things.

If you want to be notified when replacement parts are available, you can enter your email on a waiting list. Check out iFixit's official teardown of the device while you wait.
