The former Vice President will urge Republicans to move on from the 2020 election and will make it clear that there is no room in the party for apologists for Putin.

In a speech to the party's top donors in New Orleans, Vice President Mike Pence will take on those in his party who have failed to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.

If NATO had not expanded the borders of freedom, where would Russian tanks be today? According to excerpts from the speech, there is no room for apologists for Putin.

The excerpts shared ahead of the speech did not reference the former president. Trump has used language that has been criticized as deferential to Putin, including calling the Russian leader smart and saying the attack never would have happened on his watch.

As he lays the groundwork for a possible presidential run, Pence will continue to push back on Trump's lies about the 2020 election. Trump, who has been teasing his own comeback bid that could potentially put the two in direct competition, has continued to insist that he had the power to overturn the 2020 election, which he did not.

The elections are about the future, and the Republicans need to unite around an optimistic vision for the future. We can't win by fighting yesterday's battles or the past.

The vice president has been willing to challenge Trump in a dramatic departure from his deferential posture.

The two men will not see each other again until after the Capitol insurrection of January 6, 2021.

He will blame the current president for the actions of Putin and the Republican Party will blame President Biden.

It is no coincidence that Russia waited until 2022, according to excerpts.

While his allies believe that he can forge a coalition that brings together movement conservatives, white evangelical Christians and more establishment-minded Republicans, Trump's attacks on him have made him unpopular with large swaths of Trump's loyal base, potentially complicating his bid.

A mob of Trump supporters broke into the Capitol building and shouted "Hang Mike Pence!" as he and his family were whisked to safety.
