U.S. Soccer bans anti-gay chants at sanctioned matches

The policy must be followed during any international match in the U.S.

The USSF's rules committee will make sure the resolution doesn't conflict with other policies. The annual general meeting of the federation was taking place in Atlanta.

The Mexico Football Federation banned those who chant for five years.

The issue of anti-gay chants by fans of the Mexico national team has been brought up by the Mexico federation, which has been fined multiple times by the world governing body. The USSF did not have a policy against discrimination.

The three gender equity resolutions were tabled so that more information could be gathered.

The Rooney Rule-esque policy for minority hiring was intended to be updated. Previously the rule required minority candidates to be interviewed for each open senior executive, full-time head coach and full-time assistant coach position, but the proposed language would change so the team would interview women and candidates from underserved communities.

The second part of the proposal requires that by the year 2027, the number of men and women full-time coaches in the national teams program should be equal.

The USSF CEO and sporting director must present to the board a plan to increase the number of licensed coaches who are women to a level equal to that of licensed coaches who are men by the year 2028, according to the third section of the proposal.

There was broad support for the concepts put forth in the gender equity resolutions, but some board members were uneasy that the process was rushed and hadn't previously included the DEIB committee.

Cindy Parlow Cone noted that there were no experts present at the meeting.

Will Wilson has been tasked with overseeing the process and making sure everyone is included. He will present a plan for the resolution at the next board meeting.
