White House may delay student loan payments yet again as it weighs debt forgiveness

Student loan forgiveness was not mentioned by President Joe Biden in his State of the Union address. A spokesman for the administration says cancellation is still on the table.

White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said that a decision on whether to forgive student debt through executive action will be made before the payments resume. The bills are scheduled to start again in May after being on pause since March 2020.

The president is going to look at what we should do on student debt before the pause expires, or he will extend the pause.

The pause has been extended five times.

Biden has made little to no mention of loan cancellation since he took office. On the campaign trail, he promised to quickly cancel loans.

In addition to skipping the topic in his speech to the nation this week, he also didn't answer a reporter's question if he planned to still cancel the debt at a recent news conference.

The president is still considering cancellation, according to the White House.

Critics of a student debt jubilee say that it would be unfair to those who didn't borrow for their education or those who have paid off their loans.

The student debt crisis has caused the most pain for women, people of color, and those who didn't come from wealthy families, according to progressives and advocates.

They warn that Democrats will be hurt by the lack of action.

Thomas Gokey said that a lack of movement on student debt cancellation will result in the Democratic party's base staying at home.

A recent poll shows that nearly two-thirds of likely voters are in favor of Biden canceling some or all of his student debt, with more than 70% of Latino and Black voters in favor.

Gokey said that advocates were having an impact on the White House deliberations.

Gokey said that a few months ago they were adamant that they had extended the payment pause for the last time.

He hopes that the administration doesn't forgive $10,000 only and then restart payments.

He said that cancelling $10,000 is the same thing as canceling nothing for the vast majority of people.
