After Russia attacked a nuclear plant in Ukraine, China broke its silence and said it wasgravely concerned about the safety of the plants.

Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Ukrainian officials said the attack caused a fire that was subdued and that radiation levels were stable.

The attack prompted the Chinese foreign ministry to say it was concerned about the nuclear safety of Ukraine and to urge calm by Russian forces.

China is gravely concerned about the safety and security of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman told a Friday press conference.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation and call on relevant parties to keep calm and exercise restraint, prevent further escalation of the situation and ensure the safety of relevant nuclear facilities.

China is one of the countries with nuclear weapons.

Since Putin launched a full invasion into Ukraine, Beijing has avoided condemning him.

China abstained from voting at the United Nations to sanction Russia and demand the withdrawal of Russian troops. Last week, it criticized Western nations for imposing sanctions on Russia, saying that punishment never works.

China has distanced itself from Russia in recent days.

Wang told reporters that China and Russia were strategic partners of coordination, a change from the Chinese foreign ministry's announcement last year that the two countries were better than allies.

On Tuesday, Wang Yi told his Ukrainian counterpart that China regretted the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to a Chinese foreign ministry readout.
