It all started with a risk. A risk is calculated but not different.

As a prolific goalscorer on the north west non-League circuit - with two FA Sunday Cup medals to his name - his stock was rising as he approached his mid-20s, and balancing football with a day job was proving to be a challenge.

He knew something had to change.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, he explained that he was working for Plastic Omnium and Jaguar.

I left my job to play football because it was shift work, and it was a big gamble.

He joined the North West Counties League's premier division in October 2020 and helped them to the FA Vase final in a season disrupted by the Covid-19 epidemic.

He didn't know that seven months later, one afternoon at Wembley, he would score a hat-trick in a win over Binfield.

I should have scored four, but the keeper saved one in the last minute.

That was one of the best things I have ever done. Traveling up and staying, then walking up and into the ground is the whole experience. Wembley is amazing.

It was a normal game after the whistle went. I thought I could keep scoring after I scored the first one. The whole club deserved it, so I was made up.

The phone started to ring frequently.

It was going crazy for about two or three weeks after that, and I had loads of agents calling me, asking me to sign with them. I had a lot of clubs asking me to train with them, but I didn't really want to do that, I just wanted a club to come in and offer me something.

I signed with Paul Stretford, who is the owner of Warrington, and found out that they were interested. I was told what I wanted to hear. I signed and that was the best choice I could have made.

Nevitt joined the club on a contract until the end of the season. It would have been understandable if he had developed sufficiently in order to make the step up and then make the matchday squad.

He has achieved more than that.

He has appeared in 29 of the 34 games he has played in Sky Bet League Two, scoring four goals and recording one assist. He scored on his debut in the Carabao Cup.

Did he think everything would fall into place?

I don't think it was supposed to happen so quickly. It all happened so quickly because I worked hard.

Micky understands where I came from and he has helped me. When I am doing well, he always tells me to keep going and to never forget how far I have come.

The step up at the beginning was hard because I didn't have a break through out the summer and I was playing every week. The levels were completely different when I got there. The players were very fast.

When I joined Tranmere, I was 93 pounds, but now I'm 81 pounds. The staff spoke to me about trying to get down to 88 kilogrammes and I ended up getting down lower because of the extra stuff I have worked on myself. I have always been fast, but since I have lost weight, it is crazy how fast I am.

I have always been strong and powerful, even though I have lost weight. I have become a bit sharper and faster. I have worked hard and it has paid off.

He was given a new deal in November which will keep him at Prenton Park until the summer of 2023.

I wasn't expecting it, but the manager said that I deserved another two years and that I proved how good I am.

I joined this club because I could still live at home. When I was a professional, I was not travelling or staying away from home. It could be hard or depressing, but I can sometimes switch off and chill if I were somewhere else.

I want to stay at Tranmere and that contract shows me that they want me there as well.

Life has changed for Nevitt, but he has not given up on his dream. He is still a regular at the stadium, watching his beloved team in games on Sunday and Wednesday that do not interfere with the busy schedule of the club.

He says that nothing has changed since he became a pro. I never thought I would do this, but I am doing it now. I cannot take anything for granted.

I still watch my mates in Sunday league. I support them all the time. I enjoy watching and being involved with football.

Old habits are hard to change. You can remove the man from non-League, but you can't remove the man from non-League.
