  • The F-35C stealth fighter jet was fished out of the South China Sea.

  • The jet crashed on January 24.

  • The location of the crash and the sensitive nature of advanced technology made recovering the plane a priority.

The sunken F-35C stealth fighter jet was recovered by the US Navy over a month after it fell into the sea on the deck of the aircraft carrier.

The Navy initially characterized the crash of the fifth-generation fighter jet on January 24 as a landing accident.

A team from 7th Fleet and Naval Sea Systems Command used a diving support construction vessel (DSCV) Picasso and a remotely operated vehicle to recover the aircraft from a depth of 12,400 feet.

A photo of the F-35 appeared online after the crash. A video showing the plane crash on the deck of the Carl Vinson, burst into flames, and slide across the flight deck and into the sea was leaked. The visuals were confirmed by the Navy.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Within 30 to 45 minutes of the incident, the ship was ready to fight again.

It is not possible to tell from the video if the crash was due to human error or a technical malfunction.

The ramp strike was caused by the pilot getting too low on the approach, and it is likely a slow airspeed contributed, Snodgrass said.

Experts said that retrieving the plane as soon as possible would be a priority given the sensitive nature of the advanced technology on the aircraft. It was argued that the Navy needed to recover it before a foreign power could get its hands on it.

If the Chinese were able to get a copy of an actual F-35 to reverse-engineer its features, it would be a huge opportunity.

If they got a hold of an actual F-35, it would help them figure out how to better counter it.

The Navy said it took 37 days to recover the aircraft, which will be delivered to a military installation in the area for further investigation and evaluation.
