A video live stream from the plant, which is the largest in Europe, showed at least one building in flames, as well as intermittent explosions, and a column of armored vehicles outside.
Russian forces were firing from all sides at Zaporizhzhia, according to Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister.
Denys Shmyhal, the country's prime minister, called for a no-fly zone over the facility, saying it was a question of the security of the whole world.
