The Ukrainian military is using its home turf to stymies Russian forces on multiple fronts, according to Gen. Mark Milley.

Although the strategic city of Kherson fell to Russia on Wednesday, officials said that Ukrainian forces were mounting battles up and down the Russian lines with what they described as a resourcefulness and creativity that could trip up Russian troops for weeks or months to come.

The tactics employed by the Ukrainian troops were to bedevil the Russians wherever they could, according to Milley. He said that the Ukrainian troops are fighting with courage and skill against the Russians.

The New York Times has a morning newsletter.

Fighting Ukrainian people has become the eyes and ears of the world because of their willingness to die to protect it.

Milley made public comments to reporters traveling with him to meet with European officials at NATO, his first since Putin began his brutal efforts to seize Ukraine.

After meeting with NATO's secretary-general, Milley traveled to Germany to meet with U.S. European Command.

The Ukrainian military, which has been backed in recent days with arms shipments from NATO countries, was performing better and putting up more resistance than most experts expected.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin says the Russian military has offered safe corridors to civilians to leave areas of fighting. In a video call with members of his Security Council, Putin accused Ukrainian nationalist groups of preventing civilians from leaving. The Russian military says it has only struck military facilities and not targeted residential areas, a claim that has been contradicted by the abundant evidence of massive casualties and damage to residential areas in Ukraine documented by The Associated Press.
