Tech workers at The New York Times voted in favor of certifying their union in a National Labor Relations Board election, making it one of the biggest tech unions in America.
The workers voted in favor of the proposal, easily reaching the majority of the votes that were cast. The Times Tech Guild can begin negotiations for a contract after a win.
Nozlee Samad said they are ecstatic and soaking in what this means for the tech industry as a whole.
The union was eager to negotiate a contract similar to the one the newsroom unit has been fighting for.
Danielle Rhoades Ha, a Times spokeswoman, said The Times was looking forward to working with the union to establish a contract.
She said that the election process was important so that colleagues could learn more about the union, hear both sides of the argument and make an informed decision.
The Times Tech Guild, which represents 600 software engineers, product managers, designers, data analysts and other workers, asked The Times for voluntary recognition in April. The matter went to the labor board after the Times declined.
The labor board alleged in a complaint in January that The Times' management had violated federal workplace law by preventing some employees from showing their support for the union. The company disagreed with the allegations, according to a Times spokeswoman.
The Times Tech Guild is represented by the NewsGuild of New York, which also represents editorial workers at The New York Times. The Wirecutter union was recognized by The Times.
