  • The road to the largest nuclear power plant in Europe was blocked by Ukrainian civilians.

  • Hundreds of people and a barricaded road are shown in a video shared by the mayor.

  • An official from the interior ministry of Ukraine begged Russia to stop shelling near the site.

The Russian military was denied access to Europe's largest nuclear power plant by a huge crowd of Ukrainian civilians.

The mayor of Enerhodar, Dmitro Orlov, shared footage of hundreds of people on a long stretch of road, some behind barricades and some waving Ukrainian flags.

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located in Enerhodar. In the southeast of the country, Russian forces have made their most successful advances.

Russia claimed in a March 1 letter that it was in control of the region around the plant, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA said that earlier that day that the facilities were in Ukrainian hands.

Local civilians created a barricade on the way to their city and the plant.

This is how the people of Enerhodar defend their city.

There are many examples of Ukrainians standing up to Russian advances. Dmytro Kuleba reposted an image from the video.

Russian soldiers and plant representatives met on Wednesday for negotiations after the confrontation.

After that, he asked residents of the city to return home, but early on Thursday asked them to block the road again, saying that a column of military vehicles was approaching.

Russian forces captured Chernobyl, the site of a nuclear disaster, on February 25.

Ukrainian officials said that the radiation levels were increasing after the capture. The site had been largely decontaminated, so the danger is low, according to nuclear experts.

The plant is active. An advisor to the Interior Ministry of Ukraine wrote on Facebook that Europe was on the verge of a nuclear disaster.

On February 26, an official from the interior ministry of Ukraine told the news agency that Russian forces had aimed rockets at the site.

They will not be able to penetrate the concrete shell of the reactor, but they will surely damage the equipment necessary for the safety of the nuclear power plant.

An accident may occur as at the ChernobylNPP or the FukushimaNPP.
