Russian attacks across the country intensified as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a dire appeal for help.

Zelensky said during a news conference that the end of the world has arrived.

Zelensky appealed to Western leaders to set up a no-fly zone.

If you don't have the power to close the skies, then give me planes.

The Ukrainian leader called for negotiations with Putin.

Good Lord, what do you want? Leave our land. If you want to stay, sit down with me at the negotiating table. Zelensky said not from 30 meters away, as reported by the Moscow bureau chief of the Financial Times. The line seems to be a reference to the long table Putin uses for meetings with foreign leaders and his own advisers.

Sit down with me and talk. What are you afraid of? Zelensky said that they were no threat to anyone.

One week after Putin ordered a military invasion of Ukraine, his comments came. After an attempt by its forces to encircle the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv appeared to stall, Russia has since stepped up its assault on key cities.

Russian troops captured Kherson, their first major Ukrainian city since the start of the invasion, according to the New York Times. Zelensky's office denied the report, saying the battle for the port city was ongoing.

In other Ukrainian cities, battles rage as outnumbered Ukrainian troops mount a ferocious response that has been aided by ordinary citizens wielding Molotov cocktails.

There appeared to be no end to the invasion in sight as the Ukrainian and Russian delegations were expected to meet Thursday.

Zelensky pleaded with NATO countries to help defend the nation.

If we are no more, we will be next, he said.
