William Barr, who was the U.S. Attorney General at the time, told Donald Trump there was no evidence that the election was fraudulent.

I told him that there was no election fraud. Barr said in an interview with NBC News that it was wrong of him to shovel it out the way his team was. The first part of the interview was aired on MSNBC.

The sit-down with Holt is Barr's first televised interview since he stepped down as attorney general. Barr is publishing a new book about his time in the Trump administration, which has prompted criticism from some that he remained silent about the former president until he could profit from book sales.

Holt's interview will be broadcasted on NBC Nightly News tonight. This Sunday at 9 pm on NBC, there will be a special.

After Trump summoned him to a meeting in the White House, Barr almost quit. The call came after the Associated Press published an interview with Barr where he said there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.

To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have changed the outcome of the election.

Barr said that Trump questioned him about his comments after he called him into his private dining room.

According to Barr, the Department of Justice found no evidence to support the various conspiracy theories that Trump and his legal team were pushing.

I had the answers when he asked about different theories. Barr said that he was able to tell him that it was wrong.

Trump listened, but he was angry about it.

Barr said he told Trump that he was upset with him. I am perfectly happy to tender my resignation.

Barr said that Trump accepted after he slapped his desk. Barr recalled that he was accepted. He slapped it again. Go home. Don't go back to your office. Go home. You're done.

In a letter to NBC, Trump said he was the one who asked Barr to resign and called his former attorney general's account a fabrication.

The White House lawyers stopped Barr from leaving the premises to tell Trump he wasn't fired, but the president continued to take shots at Barr.

He hasn't done anything. He hasn't looked for voter fraud, Trump said at the White House. This is criminal stuff.

On December 14th, Barr submitted his resignation.

Barr told Trump in his resignation letter that he was proud to have played a role in the many successes and achievements.

Our relationship has been very good, he has done an outstanding job.

Holt challenges Barr's record as Attorney General in an interview with Barr, whose book "One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General" goes on sale March 8. The interview will be aired on Sunday night at 9 p.m. On NBC.
