An inquest has heard that Joey Beauchamp was found dead.

The 50-year-old former footballer was identified by his brother at his home in Kidlington.

The cause of death was hanging, according to the senior coroner for Oxfordshire.

He adjourned the inquest to 17 May.

In a statement after his death, Oxford United said that Mr Beauchamp was one of its greatest ever players.

A minute's applause was held at the club's last home game against Cambridge on Saturday, which the U's won 4-2.

The game was attended by Mr. Beauchamp's family and the club produced a special programme in his memory.

The mental health charity Mind was the beneficiary of every ticket sold.

He joined West Ham in June 1994 but never played a game for the Hammers because of his homesickness.

He was sold by West Ham to Oxford for 850,000 but returned to the Manor Ground after 49 appearances.

After rejoining Oxford in 1995, he played a further 284 times for the club before retiring in 2002.

After developing a career-threatening toe injury, Beauchamp was released by the U's in June 2002. He didn't play professional football again.
