Apple Maps and Weather apps now show part of Ukraine when accessed outside of Russia. The company has updated its stance on the territorial dispute. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia may have something to do with it.
Apple's apps tried to sidestep the issue by refusing to record the peninsula as part of any country when accessed in most places. Apple updated its Maps and Weather apps to show the peninsula as part of Russia when viewed within Russia, angering Ukrainians.
The decision to acknowledge Russia's claim was loudly criticized by Ukrainian officials at the time.
It seems that Apple is taking a slightly different stance, clearly marking the peninsula as part of Ukraine, at least outside Russia. When accessed from other countries, including the U.S., Australia, and, of course, Ukraine, Apple Maps and Weather now consider the peninsula to be Ukrainian territory.
When the change was made, Apple was asked if the peninsula was still marked as Russian territory.
Russia invaded the peninsula and installed new officials after annexing it. The referendum gave no option for the peninsula to remain in Ukraine.
The majority of the international community condemned Russia for its actions and refused to recognize its claim over the peninsula. The country was placed under sanctions after the invasion.
Russia's most recent invasion of Ukraine appears to have had no effect on the country.
Apple responded to the invasion by stopping product sales in Russia and removing Russia Today and Sputnik News from App Stores outside the country. There were no changes to the Apple Maps and Weather apps mentioned in the announcement.
Apple said in a statement that they are concerned about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and stand with the people who are suffering.
