If the invasion of Ukraine doesn't go as planned, Russian President Vladimir Putin probably has to worry about a group of people more than anyone else.

The former top analyst on the National Security Council told Stephen Colbert that it was not Russia's obscenely rich oligarchs who faced economic sanctions.

Russia's heads of intelligence, military and security services cooked up the invasion plan with Putin.

Hill said that these are not the kind of guys who have a yacht off Monaco or a palace in Paris. They have that fortress mentality.

If it looks like Russia is losing, members of this small circle are who Putin probably has to worry about. During Trump's first impeachment, Hill was an important witness.

I don't think they care about the world of public opinion, Hill said.
