The ex-Louisville cop on trial over the deadly raid testified in his own defense on Wednesday as his mother walked out of court.

The mother of Taylor Palmer stood up and left the room after being told by the witness that she did not need to die that night.

Hankison is not on trial for Taylor's death, but for firing bullets into a neighboring apartment that killed three people. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of wanton endangerment. No one else connected to the raid has been charged with a crime.

During the March 2020 raid, Hankison testified that he used his weapon and that he did not do anything wrong.

Hankison testified that he thought they were being executed with the rifle.

Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, shot Mattingly once after police rammed in the door to execute a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation into Taylor's ex-boyfriend. Walker and Taylor were asleep when he fired his weapon thinking they were being attacked.

Hankison said that the muzzle flash of Walker's shot briefly illuminated the apartment's interior hallway and the officer mistakenly believed the shadowy figure he could see was in a shooting position with an assault rifle. No such rifle was ever found.

Hankison said he heard a volley of gunfire as he ran from the front door to the side of the apartment to escape the fatal funnel. It was the sound of his two colleagues firing rounds that struck Taylor.

Hankison said he thought he was shooting at a figure in the hallway when he fired his 10 rounds. Several of his rounds went into the apartment next to him.

Walker told officers that Taylor was dead when he was ordered out of the apartment. Hankison was surprised to learn there were more than one person in the apartment.

He said that he was shaking because there was only one person in the apartment and that there was a girl inside.

Hankison told the jury that this was the first time he had fired his weapon while on duty, but that he had participated in as many as 1,000 search warrants during his career.

He was not shown floor plans or photos of Taylor's apartment or building, even though he had signed up to participate in the raid that afternoon. He didn't know that there was an apartment behind her.

Defense attorney Stew Mathews asked what his feelings were about the incident.

Hankison said that this didn't have to happen.
