Tannenbaum: Rodgers is being 'selfish' (2:09)

Mike Tannenbaum and Marcus Spears explain why Rodgers needs to make a decision quickly. There is a time and a place for it.

Matt LaFleur won't blow up Rodgers phone with calls, texts, and GIFs telling him how much the Green Bay Packers want him back for another season.

LaFleur knows that Rodgers has a lot to ponder.

The Packers coach wants to keep the lines of communication open while Rodgers makes his decision.

I told him that I don't want to tell him how much we love him and how much we want him back, so he just needs to be respectful of his space.

LaFleur made it clear that Rodgers was involved in the hiring of his new quarterbacks coach. It was no coincidence that LaFleur lured Tom Clements, one of Rodgers original coaches in the NFL, out of retirement.

When asked what part Rodgers played in the hire, LaFleur said he had a significant role.

When we had an opportunity, it was very interesting to see how much he credits Tom for his development.

LaFleur wasn't willing to say that the return of Clements meant a Rodgers return was imminent even though those familiar with the process don't believe he came out of retirement to coach Jordan Love.

I don't want to get into those conversations too much, but when you have a player of that caliber, as important as he has been to this organization, and then when he credits and gives somebody like that so much praise, I think it's important.

Before they met over lunch in Los Angeles during Super Bowl week, LaFleur had never worked with Clements, who was on previous coach Mike McCarthy's staff.

I think we interviewed each other to some degree, but just the conversations we had, it was pretty easy for me to see why he is such a great quarterbacks coach and developer. His ability to develop quarterbacks no matter who is in the room is going to be very beneficial to the Green Bay Packers organization.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters at the NFL scouting combine that he has not received any trade offers for Rodgers and that he believes the two-time reigning NFL Most Valuable Player will make a decision before free agency opens on March 16.

Rodgers said last week during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show that he had a few more things to consider, but he would make a decision on whether to play in 2022.

You always want to be respectful, LaFleur said.
