Dave Carney, a campaign representative for Abbott, told reporters on a call that the governor won the primary with 75 to 80 percent of the vote.

The rule is a winning issue because Texans have common sense and Democrats are out of touch.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services was asked to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into the parents of children who have received gender-affirming treatment.

According to the allegations in the lawsuit, the parents of a trans child could lose their jobs and be listed on a child abuse registry if the DFPS starts an investigation into them.

The Abbott campaign has yet to respond to a request.

Chief Critics

The Texas rule has drawn opposition from Democrats, celebrities and medical groups, with the American Civil Liberties Union noting in a lawsuit that organizations including the National Association of Social Workers, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Association and Prevent Child Abuse America have opposed it.

What To Watch For

A judge in Texas is expected to rule later Wednesday on whether to temporarily block the directive as the lawsuit against it moves forward.

Key Background

The Texas directive is part of a larger wave of policies targeting trans people. NBC News reported that seven states introduced measures targeting trans and non-binary youths in the first week of the year. The lawsuit states that no other state equates gender-affirming care to child abuse or restricts doctors from treating gender Dysphoria. The Texas legislature rejected legislation that would have classified the treatment as child abuse, prompting Abbott to issue the rule as a directive based on a legal opinion from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
