A huge cargo ship full of cars has been burning in the Atlantic and has finally succumbed to the depths.
The New York Times is reporting that the cargo ship that was carrying 4,000 luxury cars from Volkswagen to Rhode Island has sunk after burning in the North Atlantic for two weeks.
The environment of the Azores, a archipelago off the coast of Portugal about 250 miles from where the ship sank, is concerned by the sinking of these high-end vehicles. Multiple species of whales as well as dolphins and sharks can be found in the area, which is covered in coral reefs.
The environmentalist group Oceana told the Times that the fire on the ship was worse because of the batteries inside the electric vehicles.
The captain of the port on the Azorean island of Faial said in an interview that the batteries played a role in the fire.
The Portuguese Navy confirmed in a statement that the Felicity Ace sank after being towed to the shore. The previous reports indicated that the crew of the ship had been evacuated so there were no human casualties.
It will take a lengthy forensic investigation to determine what caused the fire, how much money the companies and consumers involved lost, and how harmful the blaze will be for the nearby environment.
