The Arizona Cards extended their head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim through the 2027 season.
Kyler Murray, the star quarterback for the Cards, wants an extension as well, now that he is eligible after his third season in the league.
The final year of his initial deal with Arizona was set to be the final year of a four-year contract signed by new coach Kliff Kingsbury. The extension that Keim signed last year was set to last through 2022. Keim and Kingsbury are linked for the next five years.
The leadership of both Steve and Kliff have been key factors in the team's improvement over the last three seasons, according to a statement released by the team.
After six seasons at Texas Tech, where he went 35-40, Kliff Kingsbury was fired, but he has led the Cards to year-over-year improvements. They made the playoffs for the first time in three years when they made the playoffs in 2021, after going 8-8 in the first three seasons.
The success in Arizona has been marred by late-season meltdowns.
Arizona missed the playoffs in 2020 after losing two games in the last two weeks. The Los Angeles Rams beat the Cards in the wild-card game and ended their season with a 4-7 record.
The focus will be on Murray now that Keim and Kingsbury have received extensions.
According to the statement released early Monday morning, Murray can offer long-term stability to the organization and that a detailed contract proposal was sent to the Cards.
Keim said at the scouting combine that he had had constant dialogue with Burkhardt but neither the coach nor the general manager had talked to Murray since the statement.
On his well-earned contract extension, the coach was thanked by the lawyer, who also represented him.
