More than 870,000 people have fled from Ukraine, the UN said, nearly a week after Russia invaded, with Poland saying it had welcomed more than 450,000 refugees.
Poland's border guard agency says that more than 453,000 people have fled from Ukraine into Poland since Russia launched an invasion on February 24.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees believes there are around 874,000 people who have fled Ukraine so far.
More than 116,000 refugees are crossing into Hungary, around 80,000 into Moldova, 67,000 into Slovakia, and more than 44,500 into Romania, according to the UN Refugee Agency.
Around 70,000 people have sought refuge in other European countries.
Over 43,000 people have crossed into Russia from Ukraine, according to the UNCHR.
Many countries had to take in refugees from Africa and the Middle East, but now Europe has an open door policy to refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. Nations like Hungary and Poland have been criticized for a stark contrast in their response to asylum seekers and migrants, as they have previously demonized asylum seekers and migrants from these regions. The head of the UN Refugee Agency acknowledged in a statement Tuesday that foreign nationals from Asia and Africa have complained of being pushed back into Ukraine at the border. According to a new decree signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, the visa requirements for foreign nationals have been lifted. Zelensky said the country was in the process of setting up a foreign legion unit for international volunteers and those interested should contact the defense attache of their country. Around 70 people from Japan have applied to join the legion.
