Insider has learned that two Russian state-controlled media outlets have been blocked from the Play Store in Europe.

As the European Commission prepares to ban access to the two state-backed channels, which have denied Russia's invasion, it is the latest in the company's efforts to rein in Russian misinformation about the conflict. Downloads of the RT app were blocked by the internet giant.

The company's European app store policy is in line with the one at YouTube, which announced on Tuesday that it would block Sputnik channels across Europe. Russian state-funded media sites were banned from appearing on the news section of the website.

International coalitions including the US and EU continue to put pressure on Russia as tech companies such as Apple and Google are updating their policies.

On Tuesday, Apple said it would block Sputnik andRT from its App Store in all territories outside of Russia. Both apps are still available on the Play Store in territories outside of Europe.
