MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has been heavily involved in the discussions between team owners and the players

The start of the MLB season has been delayed because of a labour dispute between team owners and players.

Nine days of negotiations between the MLB and the players association ended in a stalemate.

The opening round of matches were canceled by the MLB.

"We worked hard to avoid an outcome that is bad for our fans, our players and our clubs."

The new season was supposed to start on 31 March.

The size of the league's competitive balance tax, which works like a salary cap, is one of the money related issues that the MLB and the MLBPA have been unable to come to an agreement on.

We are not going to be able to play the first two series of the regular season.

The failure to reach an agreement was not due to lack of effort by either party.

The players came here for nine days and worked hard to make a deal.

The owners offered to compromise in order to avoid a cancellation of the games, including an offer to raise the minimum salary to $700,000.

It will be the first time regular season games have been lost since 1995 because of the Covid-19 epidemic, although the 2020 season was shortened because of it.
