American and Delta Air Lines stopped partnerships with Russian carriers.
Russian airspace is leased for a fee to international airlines, but they have restricted route options over its territory which can be used by U.S. carriers.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. would close its airspace.
Most flights to North America were stopped by Russia's airlines because of the EU and Canadian airspace limitation. One Aeroflot flight turned around after crossing Canadian territory over the weekend, while a separate flight was mistakenly granted permission to transit through its airspace. Canadian authorities will investigate the mistake.
The FAA banned U.S. pilots and air carriers from flying over parts of western Russia.
