In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, the parents of a trans teenager in Texas said they are being investigated by the state.

The parents of the 16-year-old girl are asking a judge to block the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services from investigating them and the parents of other trans youth under a directive Abbott issued last month.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas, saying that their actions caused terror and anxiety among the families of the trans youth.

The lawsuit marks the first report of parents being investigated after Abbott ordered that certain gender-confirming treatments be labeled as child abuse.

The Department of Family and Protective Services, which last week said it did not have any open cases, said Tuesday that it had received three reports but would not say how many resulted in investigations. The agency didn't comment on the suit. The governor's office did not reply to the request.

The mother works at the Department of Family and Protective Services on the review of reports of abuse and neglect, according to the lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, she asked her supervisor how Abbott's order would affect the agency's policy.

The mother was placed on leave because she has a child with a different sex, and the family was told the next day that they would be investigated.

The American Medical Association has opposed Republican-backed restrictions filed in statehouses nationwide.

Arkansas was the first state to pass a law prohibiting gender confirmation treatments for children. The state is appealing after a judge blocked the law.

The Texas teen, who has received puberty-delaying medication and hormone therapy, has been traumatized by the prospect of being separated from her parents.

The mother said in a declaration that the stress has taken a toll on her daughter, who is typically joyful and happy.

The lawsuit said that a licensed psychologist would be put in a "untenable situation" if she did not report clients who received gender-affirming care to the state.
