McConnell rebuked Scott for proposing a plan that would hike taxes on millions of Americans.

McConnell was not aware that Scott had just walked away from the podium after being asked about his plan.

McConnell will be the majority leader if we have the majority next year. We won't have a bill that raises taxes on half the American people and ends social security and Medicare within five years.

The Republican Senate majority agenda will focus on what the American people are concerned about: inflation, energy, defense, the border, and crime.

It's a remarkable public break between two Senate Republicans at the helm of the GOP. Scott introduced his plan last week in order to give conservatives something to campaign on. The Florida Republican has previously stated that he was not the chief of their campaign fundraising.

The Senate office of Scott declined to comment.

The opposite approach has been adopted by McConnell. If Republicans regain control of the Senate, he will not outline their plans as he tries to focus on President Joe Biden's performance.

The Scott agenda became fodder for Democrats. They trained their attacks on Scott's call for all Americans to pay an income tax so they haveskin in the game.

A version of the Scott plan would mean that over half of Americans would have to pay federal income taxes in 2021, according to the Tax Policy Center. Many Americans don't pay income tax because they don't have enough money to pay it.

The Scott plan included a proposal to finish a wall on the southern US border and name it after Donald Trump. Every federal law would have to be re-approve by Congress after five years.

Kevin Brady, the ranking Republican on the House Ways and Means panel, told Insider that the principles that will help working Americans is to lower taxes.

  • The top Senate Republican and the architect of the party caucus's campaign strategy were at odds on Tuesday over a controversial legislative plan intended to tell voters what to expect if Republicans capture control of the chamber in the November elections. The 11-point plan proposed by Senator Rick Scott had already rankled many Republicans with proposals that would impose income taxes on Americans who currently earn too little to pay taxes and require all legislation enacted by Congress to sunset after five years. McConnell made it clear that initiatives of the kind proposed by Scott would be out of the question.
