San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is generating significant interest in trade discussions even though he will have shoulder surgery this summer.
The surgery is for an injury he suffered in the Wild Card win over the Dallas Cowboys. While the surgery will sideline him until this summer, it is not expected to impact his trade status, with the 49ers likely to move him at some point in March.
The veteran quarterback is expected to start throwing again before July 4 and will work with the new medical and coaching staffs of whichever team trades for him.
The writing was on the wall for Garoppolo when the 49ers traded up to select Lance with the 3rd overall pick. The team thought of Lance as a long-term answer at the position, even though he didn't see the field much as a rookies.
Garoppolo's representatives were working with San Francisco to facilitate a trade.
He told reporters he wanted to go to a winning team.
Albert Breer of The MMQB reported that the 49ers weren't clear on what Garoppolo's trade value will be. There is still some uncertainty about Teddy, Jameis, Russell, and Deshaun, and they are all free agents.
The 30-year-old veteran was solid for San Francisco last season and completed 68.3% of his passes for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdown and 12 interceptions.
The team schemed around him a number of times, and his pick in the final two minutes of the game ended San Francisco's chances of defeating the Rams.
Garoppolo has played in the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship Game. While he isn't going to challenge for theMVP and is likely more of a backup option than the first plan for many teams, he is still someone who will have a market at some point this summer.
That is the case even with this surgery.
