  • Alexander Vindman was a lieutenant colonel and accused Trump and the GOP of emboldening Putin.

  • He said the GOP had blood on its hands.

  • Vindman was a witness in the first impeachment investigation.

Alexander Vindman, who rose to prominence as a witness in Donald Trump's first impeachment trial, said that the Republican Party has blood on its hands for allowing Russia to invade Ukraine.

Vindman made the comments in an interview with Salon that was published on Monday.

He said that Putin acted because of Trump's refusal to criticize him. He blamed Trump for making the US weaker.

He highlighted their praise for Putin even as it became clear that he would invade.

The reason that Russia launched this operation is because of the Tucker Carlsons, the Donald Trumps, the Mike Pompeos, and other Republicans.

The domestic divisions exposed by the Jan 6 riot were likely a factor in Putin's decision to act now, according to Vindman, who served as the top Europe expert on the National Security Council.

Like Trump, Putin smells vulnerability and exploits it. The United States was vulnerable and distracted by Putin. He has been testing our resolve. He said that he had been getting positive signals.

There is blood on the Republican Party's hands. He said that they were partially responsible for what was happening in Ukraine.

Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump were very popular in Russia. They are always being played there. The impression is given. There is an opportunity in the United States. These people now own it.

The National Security Council's director for European affairs was subpoenaed by lawmakers in order to investigate allegations that Trump abused his power in witholding military aid from Ukraine.

The backlash of criticism from Trump and his allies was caused by Vindman's testimony that he thought the phone call in which Trump sought to pressure Zelensky to produce dirt on Biden was improper.

Several of Trump's allies are being sued by Vindman, who claims they waged a campaign of intimidation to stop him from testifying.

He resigned from the military in summer 2020 after accusing them of punishing him for testifying by spreading lies about him and forcing him from his job.

He criticized Trump and his allies for their stance on Russia, but also said that Biden had not done enough to deter it.
