The parliament of Ukraine said on Tuesday that troops from the neighboring country had entered the region.

The information was confirmed by Vitaliy Kyrylov, spokesman for the North Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine.

Hours before the development, Lukashenko told state news media that his country's troops were not going to join Russia in its assault on Ukraine.

A US defense official told reporters on Tuesday that there was no confirmation that the Belarusians were entering Ukraine.

Protests are taking place in Russia and across the world on Tuesday, the sixth day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Western nations have imposed heavy sanctions against Russia, in moves strongly condemned by the Kremlin.

Lukashenko is an authoritarian who has been in power since 1994.

He relies on the Kremlin to stay in power, and is seen as a puppet of Putin. In 2020 Lukashenko faced mass protests after he won a sixth term in an election that was widely regarded as rigged.

A fake bomb threat that led to the cancellation of a Ryanair flight and the arrest of a prominent dissident was denounced by the global community. Experts said that Lukashenko would not have done it without the permission of Putin.

Lukashenko is a close ally of Putin.
