Meta confirmed Tuesday that it is limiting the spread of content that is shaped by the Russian government. The company will suppress the spread of Russian state-linked content on social media.

Nathaniel Gleicher, head of security policy at Meta, said in a post that the company will begin attaching new labels to content linking to Russian state-affiliated outlets to give users more context before they click through to those sites. In light of the invasion, the company announced that it would make destructible messages available to its users in Russia and Ukraine.

3/ Links: We have also begun to demote posts with links to Russian state-controlled media websites on Facebook. In the days ahead, we will label these links so people who do see them will have context before clicking or sharing. We plan to take similar steps on Instagram as well. pic.twitter.com/CPgVLy1dP0

Sputnik andRT, two of the most prominent Russian state media accounts, were limited by Meta on Monday. Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said that the company fulfilled government requests to restrict the accounts due to the exceptional nature of the situation.

Similar measures were put in place by Twitter on Monday to restrict the reach of Russian government propaganda. The Russian government said last week that it would partially restrict access to Facebook in the country, after the company added warnings and fact-checking to Russian accounts.
