The Base One is the first officially licensed MagSafe charger that does not have a separate charging cable or MagSafe module built in. The Base One costs $129.45, so that convenience doesn't come cheap.
The Base One is a handsome slab of glass and aluminum that promises a more refined experience than simply hitting the charging puck on your nightstand. It looks nice, with a neat floating glass effect and about a pound of heft, to keep it from falling off your nightstand.
The $130 price tag is rough, especially for a charger that only improves on Apple's original. If you buy the Base One with the 30W plug, Nomad will give you a 30W plug for free, but you will have to pay the full price.
The company's previous weighted MagSafe Mount started at $59.95 for the zinc model and was not included in the actual MagSafe puck. The previous accessory was intended to help weigh down Apple's existing charging puck so it would stay put on your nightstand or desk. If you're a fan of those offerings, the Base One is another good step in that direction, with a nicer design, a braided cable, and a more integrated charger.
I've spent a lot of time complaining about the lack of third-party MagSafe accessories, and the addition of new options from more companies is a good thing. Hopefully, the Base One charger is just the first step in expanding integrated MagSafe modules to more products, one that offers additional function or form factors than Apple's own charger in the future, at prices that won't break the bank.
If you're looking for a more affordable way to upgrade your MagSafe charging cover, there's always Nomad's $25 leather MagSafe charging cover.
