The San Jose Police Department announced Tuesday morning that the former UFC champ had been arrested on a charge of attempted murder and was in the Santa Clara County jail.

Online records show that Velasquez is being held without bail. He will be in court on Wednesday.

The San Jose Police Department said there was a shooting near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue. A man was shot at least once and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. On Tuesday, police identified the shooter as Velasquez.

The motives and circumstances surrounding this incident are still being investigated by the San Jose Police.

In 2010 and 2011 he held the title and in 2012 and 2015 he held the title again. The California native is considered one of the top fighters. American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose is where Velasquez has been coaching since he retired from MMA.

A call for comment from the team of Velasquez was not responded to as of Tuesday morning.

After his run in the UFC, Velasquez took up professional wrestling, first in Mexico, where his parents were born, and then in WWE. He was released by World Wrestling Entertainment at the beginning of the Pandemic in 2020, but came back to work for the Mexican promotion in December. Sources said that the plan was for him to wrestle more this year.
