According to multiple reports, US officials believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is so angry with the mistakes his troops have made that he may launch a more aggressive attack that would destroy the country.

Russian troops tried to seize Kyiv but were met with resistance from the Ukrainians.

According to NBC News, Putin is confused, frustrated, and directing anger at people in his inner circle.

The main concern is how isolated he is. A Western diplomat told NBC News that the isolation is a big concern.

US officials told reporters on Monday that they fear that Putin will escalate his invasion given the lack of success on the ground.

One of the things that could result is a reevaluation of their tactics and the potential for them to be more aggressive and more overt in both the size and the scale of their targeting.

A Western official told Insider on Monday that there are some risks that come from Russia's lack of progress.

I fear the way in which Russia is frustrated in achieving its aims on the ground is leading to the use of more indiscriminate fires and as a consequence we are going to see an increase in civilian casualties.

CNN reported that US officials warned the country's lawmakers in a classified presentation on Monday that Russia could put the city of Kyiv under siege and that the situation would quickly get worse.

A US official told reporters Monday that the US is aware of the possibility of a more aggressive approach by the Russians.

One of the things that could result is a reevaluation of their tactics and the potential for them to be more aggressive and overt in their targeting of Kyiv.

Four officials told NBC News that the US has no evidence that Putin is mentally unstable.

His behavior shocked former US officials.

The former US intelligence chief General James Clapper told Insider that he was always hard, cold, disciplined and machine-like.

Now his anger is shown. His incoherent rants are frightening. He doesn't have anyone who can disagree with him.

Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Russia, told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that Putin was becoming increasingly crazy.

The US, UK, the EU, and other nations imposed sanctions on Russian entities and individuals after the invasion of Ukraine.

Putin ordered Russia's nuclear deterrent onto a special regime after he called the sanctions illegitimate.

British and American officials believe the move is a scare tactic to distract from the situation in Ukraine.
