The Washington Commanders have told teams and the world that they want a quarterback. Since the season ended, Ron Rivera has hammered this quest home.

Washington has been searching for a long-term solution for decades. The franchise has started 32 quarterbacks since it won the Super Bowl after the 1991 season. Rivera sees this as a good time to be aggressive.

They have a good foundation, according to Mike Tannenbaum, a former general manager.

Washington has been last in total QBR for the past four seasons. Washington is 26th in the NFL during that time. Washington ranked 23rd in total QBR last season with Taylor Heinicke starting. Washington considers him a starter or a backup.

According to a source, Washington reached out to every team to inquire about the availability and cost of a quarterback. The team had a list of quarterbacks. There are some options.

Swing big

Rivera wants quarterbacks such as Rodgers, Wilson, and possibly Deshaun to consider Washington. There are 22 lawsuits against Watson, who is accused of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct. Rodgers and Wilson will be pursued by the Commanders.

Rivera will point out that the offensive line has good depth and should continue to be solid even if Brandon Scherff leaves via free agency. There is a 1,000-yard running back, a 1,000-yard receiver, and a young defense.

Rivera has said that their roster is a good place to give up assets for a top quarterback.

We set ourselves up to protect the quarterback, now you have a bunch of guys around him, so let's see if we can plug that guy in and see what happens.

Wilson might be the best option. Even if Rodgers would agree to the deal, it would be hard for the Packers to trade him. The situation with former employees of the owner of Washington would make it difficult for the team to acquire him.

There is no need for Seattle to trade Wilson, and coach Pete Carroll might not want to start over with another quarterback. It is a chance for Washington to be aggressive and dream.

The front seven is really good. The Commanders are in the conversation for the best team in the conference, even though they could use another piece or two.

The mid-tier trade

Jimmy Garoppolo might be the most accomplished quarterback traded this year, with the 49ers ready to replace him. Garoppolo started on two teams that reached the playoffs and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl. He has played in 40 of a possible 65 games in four full seasons in San Francisco. Washington and other teams would have to give up picks to acquire him, and sign him to an extension, because of his injury history. He would give up a second-round pick for Garoppolo.

The question for the teams who would be trading those quarterbacks is this: What's next? Many sources don't expect these quarterbacks to be traded unless their teams can upgrade.

Garoppolo is left. Washington and other interested teams have to decide if it is better to give up picks and money for him or sign a cheaper free agent. The team that acquires him would probably not draft a quarterback.

Free agency

There are expected to be a few experienced quarterbacks available. They would cost less than $10 million and save cap space and draft capital to keep building.

If Washington signs a free agent, it's most likely that he'll pair him with a second- or third-round pick.

The staff knows Trubisky and Bridgewater, so they would make the most sense for Washington.

Scott Turner was the offensive line coach for three years in Minnesota, and Marty Hurney was the executive vice president of football/player personnel for Carolina when it signed Bridgewater.

Juan Castillo is the new tight ends coach for Washington and he was with Trubisky in Chicago. They can give a good insight into Trubisky's development after one season in Buffalo. Leno played with Trubisky in Chicago.
