The former UFC champ was arrested in San Jose, California, after a shooting.
A person was shot near a high school in San Jose at around 3 p.m. local time, and Velasquez was booked on an attempted murder charge.
The only person arrested was Velasquez, although details surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
As of Tuesday morning, Velasquez was in police custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old was a professional MMA fighter from 2006-19 after a successful stint as a collegiate wrestler at Arizona State University.
He was best known for his time with the UFC where he held the UFC title twice in three years.
After beating Brock Lesnar for the title in 2010, he lost it to Junior DosSantos one year later, but regained it in 2012 when he beat DosSantos.
After successfully defending his titles against Dos Santos and Antonio Silva, Velasquez lost the title to Fabricio Werdum.
The most recent fight was against Francis Ngannou. His career record is 14-3 with 12 wins by knockout, but he lost by first-round knockout.
After retiring from MMA, Velasquez tried his hand at pro wrestling. After signing with the company, Velasquez entered into a program with the wrestler.
At Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia in October of last year, Velasquez lost to Lesnar by submission, but he had only one televised match for the company. The way for his return to AAA was paved by the release of Velasquez in April 2020.
