The Capital One Venture X rewards are now live. It was strange that they announced the card a week before the launch, but the wait is over. I thought I would share my thoughts about the Capital One Venture X perks, features and the card overall.
Capital One has announced an end date for the 100K offer with a $200 travel credit. We don't know what the offer will be at that point.
There are a couple of things we should know about Capital One's application rules.
Capital One pulls your credit from all three bureaus. If you value your hard inquiries then you should be aware of that. They have application rules as well.
If you have been approved for a Capital One card in the last 6 months, you will be denied.
Let me give you an overview of what Capital One Venture X has to offer.
I keep going back and forth on this card. Break down my thoughts by section.
The 100,000 point welcome offer is great. It's taller than most cards because of the $10,000 cost. It is doable for most people, but when you compare it to the Chase Preferred 100,000 point offer for $4,000 in spend it doesn't look as good.
Adding in a $200 credit on top of the $395 annual fee is a nice addition.
The welcome offer is very strong. I don't mind bigger spending requirements when there is time. It helps me spread out applications as well.
This card will look very interesting to you if you already use Ultimate rewards or ThankYou points. If you dislike portals, like I dislike Southwest's boarding procedures, then this may be a deal breaker for you.
2 points per dollar is the base earning level for the card. The Capital One Venture rewards credit card is very popular. I don't like adding a middle man to my travel bookings if issues arise, so I miss all of the increased earning that happens in the portal. Hopper's customer service could be better than what we are used to because I have never used their portal.
I don't see myself booking a hotel through a portal since I wouldn't get the loyalty points I would have gotten from the hotel.
The card could be useful for car rentals. When renting a car and earning 10X is hard to pass up, I will sometimes book through a portal. You aren't missing out on that because it also has primary car rental insurance. This could be huge for some road warriors.
If the portal matches up to the airline's published pricing then this could be useful for non complicated, domestic flights. You would still earn status and miles for flights booked through the portal. I would book international flights direct.
The Capital One Venture X card is the lowest annual fee premium card that Capital One has.
The travel credit and points make this a negative card for most. If you don't want to use the portal, the Capital One Venture rewards card is probably a better fit for you.
Priority Lounge access and authorized user perks are some of the things that get a bit interesting with the card. You and two guests get access to all Priority Pass lounges. You can get a small army into a lounge with up to 4 authorized user cards, since there is no added fee. Capital One lounges don't mean much right now, but they could grow like the Centurion Lounges have.
It's nice to have top tier Hertz status and 10X earning on car rentals through the portal. Capital One Venture X is a winner if you rent cars often.
I think this is a good card, but not great. It will be a sticking point for many people if it is compulsory to earn bonus points through the portal. This may not be an issue if the portal works well and has good customer service. Time will tell.
I think anyone who rents cars often or values their status could benefit from this card. If you want to hold only one Priority Pass lounge card, this is the best option. It's great that authorized users have the same access and guesting privileges, but who knows if that will last for a long time.
Even though the annual fee is $300 more, you can offset that with a $300 portal booking and $100 in points each year. I think it is a huge improvement for most. The portal credit is assumed to be used.
Current Venture card holders can get the Capital One Venture X. We don't know if it is a product change or not, so I would try to sign up first. You could try to change the product.

Capital One has a welcome offer. It is giving up a $3K welcome offer right now and earning 2% back everywhere. You can get a welcome offer of $500 after $5K spend in the first 3 months. $3K is the total welcome offer.
There are additional card benefits.
