  • Valery Gergiev was fired from the Philharmonic on Tuesday.

  • He refused to distance himself from the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

  • A series of planned concerts were canceled by the wider classical music world.

One of the world's most respected conductors was fired on Tuesday as cultural institutions recoiled in horror at Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Valery Gergiev was removed from his job as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra because he refused to condemn the war started by his friend, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It was the most striking of setbacks for Gergiev, who has been asked to resign from his positions in the classical music world.

After the invasion, Gergiev's employers became too attached to him to allow him to work.

Gergiev was terminated from the orchestra in a press release.

Gergiev was demanded to distance himself from the invasion or be fired.

I would have expected him to change his assessment of the Russian ruler. He did not, according to the press release.

Gergiev's upcoming engagements have been canceled by New York's Carnegie Hall and the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.

Gergiev's manager quit on Sunday. Gergiev's future bookings will be canceled if he doesn't clarify his position on Ukraine.

The New York Times reported on Friday that the artist has made no secret of his sympathies in the past.

According to the New York Times, Gergiev has known about Putin since the early 90s.

The general and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater, Gergiev, was honored by Putin with a Hero of Labour commendation.

Putin offered Gergiev a birthday toast at the opening ceremony of the Mariinsky Theater.

Gergiev has supported Putin's career and denounced the anti-government band Pussy Riot, who galvanized opposition to Putin in the cultural sphere.

The Russian conductor came under fire for signing a letter in support of Russia&s annexation of the peninsula of Crimea in the early days of the invasion.

Gergiev organized a concert in the ruins of Syria after they were captured by the Russians.
