A man shot and killed his three daughters and their chaperone before taking his own life at a church in California on Monday in an incident that comes at a time when the state's lawmakers are working on legislation to allow private citizens to target gunmakers.

The incident took place at around 5 pm on Monday when the man was meeting up with his three children and their chaperone as part of a court-supervised visit.

The ages of the three girls killed in the incident were 9,10 and 13, but the chaperone's age was not revealed.

The man who shot the girl had a restraining order against him.

The shooting is being investigated by the sheriff's office.

Law enforcement sources told NBC News that the shooter used a semi automatic rifle.

The Governor of California,Gavin Newsom, responded to the incident by saying: "Another act of gun violence in America - this time in our backyard." There are kids in a church. Absolutely devastating. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.
