The Power of the Dog, a film by Jane Campion, has been criticized by SamElliott over its depiction of cowboys and the wild west.

The veteran actor, whose cinematic legacy is inextricably tied to westerns, said he took the film's portrayal of the American west as personal.

Some of the biggest releases of the year were discussed in the latest episode of the comedy show WTF with Maron, which was released on Monday.

Maron asked his guest if he'd seen Campion's drama, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the lead.

"Yeah, you want to talk about that piece of s**t?" he asked, explaining that his disdain for the film was prompted by a critic's review.

There was a full page ad in the LA Times that talked about the evisceration of the American myth.

The LA Times review of The Power of The Dog didn't mention the phrase.

The Power of the Dog is a great American story and a dazzling evisceration of one of the country's myths, according to the New York Times critic.

The cowboys in Campion's movie were compared to the dancers from the show Chippendales who wore bowties and not much else.

They are running around in chaps and no shirts. He said that there were allusions to homosexuality throughout the movie.

Maron pointed out that this is what the movie is about, in reference to the film sequences that suggest the character of Benedict is a closeted gay man.

Campion had a lack of insight into the world she was trying to recreate.

He asked what the woman from New Zealand knew about the American west. Why did she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana? Say this was the way it was.

The myth is that American cowboys were macho men out there with cattle.

I came from Texas where I was spending time with families. Big, long, extended, multiple-generation families made their livings. Their lives were all about being cowboys. I thought when I saw that movie.

The Western TV show that was being shot was called 1883 and was in Texas.

When Maron tried to defend the film, Elliott retorted: Where is the western in this western?

He said that he had two pairs of chaps. He would walk in from somewhere and then he would go to his bed.

The Power of the Dog is up for 12 Academy Awards this year.

Campion is the first woman in history to receive two nominations in the same category, having previously been nominated for her 1993 drama The Piano.

The film's other nominations include Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best actor (Cumberbatch).
