Several high-profile Republicans are introducing a joint resolution calling on President Biden to pressure the United Nations to strip Russia of its permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, which gives Moscow a veto over the council's resolutions.

The Republican effort comes after Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian government is committing war crimes and killing innocent Ukrainian civilians. Moscow is a Permanent Member of the Security Council and is driving decisions in the United Nations. Russia must be thrown out of the international community.

Putin is attempting to rebuild the Soviet Union and his ambassador should not be allowed to veto the response to Russian aggression. The sovereignty of our international partners is being threatened by the Russian Federation.

Russia is setting a new and dangerous precedent by abusing its role on the UN Security Council to shield itself from accountability for its blatant illegal and unprovoked invasion of a country. This resolution is certainly a tall order given the procedural hurdles it faces in the Security Council, but it does not mean Congress should back down.

The resolution was co-sponsored by Republican senators Kevin Cramer of North Dakota and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi.

The UN Security Council's makeup has come under scrutiny after Russia vetoed a resolution that denounced the invasion of Ukraine.

The Soviet Union was written into the charter as a permanent P5 member.

Russia took its spot on the council after the fall of the Soviet Union. On a monthly basis, the presidency of the council rotates. Russia will be replaced by the United Arab Emirates in March. The U.S. will be in charge of the council in May.

When asked about the possibility of Russia being removed from the Security Council, Linda Thomas-Greenfield appeared to dismiss it.

Russia is a member of the Security Council. She said on CNN that Russia would be held accountable for disrespecting the U.N. Charter.
