A Ukrainian government official told POLITICO that Ukrainian pilots have arrived in Poland to take control of fighter planes donated by European countries.

The impending transfer of older Russian-made planes to be used in combat against Russian forces is the most significant moment yet in a wave of promised arms transfers over the past 24 hours.

The European Union Security chief promised to transfer the fighter planes from multiple countries over the weekend.

Representatives from the Polish and Slovakian governments did not respond to the request for comment.

The pilots in Poland, Bulgaria, and Slovakia don't need much training because they all fly Russian-made planes similar to the ones used by the Ukrainian air force.

Europe was sending 70 fighter planes to Ukraine, including 28 MiG-29s from Poland, 12 from Slovakia, and 16 from Bulgaria, according to the Ukrainian parliament.

The Prime Minister of Bulgaria said on Monday that he had rejected the request.
