Is it a PC or console? Is it a mouse or a keyboard? It was a debate that raged for as long as video games themselves. Valve, the creator of games like Half-Life and Portal, and the founder of Steam attempted to unite the two camps.

The steam controller was introduced as part of the steam machine push. The initiative tried to convince partners to build gaming PCs that would sit in a living room like an XBOX or a PS, but run the massive library of PC games already available on Steam. The Steam Machine project wanted to turn living room PC gaming into a platform, and many PC owners have hooked up their computer to their television.

The problem was that most PC games don't work with a traditional gamepad. The Steam Controller is a bridge between the two worlds, and it was created by Valve.

The Steam Controller was the most popular controller of all time, with a skeleton key that could handle any control scheme and was 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465, 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 There were buttons, a thumbstick, and a gyro for aiming.

The most controversial aspect of the controller was the dual trackpads, which were designed to emulate a traditional mouse, thumbstick, trackball, or even other buttons. Unlike a regular thumbstick, which only allows for so much control, the trackpads worked like the one on your laptop, offering perfect accuracy for moving and aiming.

A fantastic tech demo with a steep learning curve

The ability to pulse and click on the cup-shaped pads using tiny solenoids is amazing, and it recreates the physical sensations of a traditional control scheme. It's similar to a laptop trackpad, but it's designed to let you move your mouse around your TV at the same speed you could with a regular mouse.

The trackpads are a great tech demo, but they had a learning curve. They were a perfect compromise between a mouse and a controller, allowing players to replicate a more traditional dual-stick setup while still offering the flexibility of a mouse. They satisfied fans of both camps, without the need for a thumbstick or a mouse, and with the whole-arm accuracy and comfort of a mouse. The controller was stuck in the middle. The Steam Controller didn't offer many reasons for people who already had a mouse and keyboard and a traditional controller to try something new.

There were other issues with the Steam Controller. The controller without a flagship product to rally around was left without a Steam Machine initiative. Games were slow to get official support if they didn't get it at all. The Steam Controller's jack-of-all-trades approach could cause issues with games that already had separate mouse and controller settings.

The steam controller was a bit ahead of its time. It was late to the market for its main purpose because Valve failed to ship it with the first Steam Machines. The company tried to recenter the device as a part of its Steam Link initiative in 2015, but missed the resurgence of cloud gaming by a few short years. The controller was discontinued at the end of the year in a $5 fire sale.

The legacy of the steam controller lives on with the steam deck. Valve is trying to bridge the gap between its PC game launcher and more traditional gamepad controls with its new gaming handheld.

The twin thumbstick setup has been common to most controllers since the original PS1, and Valve has learned to be more conservative. The company and fans have done a lot of work over the years, and the next-generation version of the steam controller's trackpads is one of them. Diehard fans filled in the missing controller support publishers didn't have, and those profiles are ready on day one for a huge chunk of the Steam library. The portable form factor helps justify the touchpads in a way that the original Steam Controller didn't.
