When asked if Americans should be concerned about the possibility of a nuclear war with Russia, President Biden curtly replied.

Biden was at a White House celebration of Black History Month when he was asked by Nancy Cordes of CBS News if the threat was related to Putin placing his country's nuclear forces on a state of alert.

As he departed from making remarks at the White House about Black History Month, I asked @POTUS if Americans should be worried about a nuclear war. His response: "No."

On Sunday, Linda Thomas-Greenfield called out Putin.

She said in an interview on CBS that President Putin was continuing to escalate the war in a way that was unacceptable.

Thomas-Greenfield noted that Russia was under no threat from the U.S. military.

On Sunday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki sought to downplay Putin's comment on Russia's nuclear forces.

This is a pattern that we have seen from President Putin through the course of this conflict, which is manufacturing threats that don't exist in order to justify further aggression, and the global community and the American people should look at it.

There was no need to change the country's nuclear alert level despite Putin's move.

The U.S. and its NATO allies are in a tricky situation because they are not willing to intervene directly in the situation in Ukraine. The administration has ruled out the idea of a no-fly zone over Ukraine. That is not something the president wants to do.

The U.S. and Russia have the largest nuclear arsenals on the planet.

Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya referred to Putin's nuclear decision with an allusion to Hitler.

Putin doesn't need a nuclear arsenal if he wants to kill himself. Kyslytsya said that he has to do what the guy in Berlin did at the end of World War II.

  • The United States has not seen any "muscle movements" after Putin said he was putting his nuclear forces on high alert. Some former U.S. officials and experts warn that it would be foolish to write off Putin's comments as bluster, given the risk that he could use nuclear weapons if the war in Ukraine spills over.
