It didn't take long for Karin Smith to realize the RV life wasn't for her.

The Jupiter, Florida, resident and single mom bought a 1995 Fleetwood Bounder for peace of mind, not only as a tool for travel, but also as a tool for travel. Smith wanted to make sure that she and her son had a roof over their heads.

I have always had fear about homeless people. Smith told USA TODAY that he thought an RV would solve the problem. My son and I would not be tied to a house. We would always have a place to live.

Smith thought owning an RV was easy.

Finding a place to keep it was her first obstacle. She began paying $125 a month to store the vehicle because her neighborhood wouldn't allow her to keep it in her driveway. The air conditioner was a necessity in the Florida heat and an expensive repair was discovered.

Smith was shocked to find out how much the RV parks cost and how little space they offered.

She said it started to feel like a money pit. What would I do with the internet? Do I work from home, do I listen to neighbors argue, or do I attend a party with 14 other people? It all fell apart.

Smith sold the RV six months after buying it. She didn't get behind the wheel.

Many Americans became RV owners during the Pandemic. Many are happy with their purchase and the sales show no sign of slowing, but there are some owners who note that rising travel costs and growing crowds have made RV travel more difficult.

Strong demand driven by COVID

The sales director at the General RV Center in Michigan said that sales have been strong the past two years because of the Pandemic.

He said that the rate of sales for first-time buyers has been very high in the last two years.

To keep up with demand, manufacturers have had to increase production. The RV Industry Association says that the number of new vehicles shipped off to dealers has increased by a record amount.

The RV industry has been growing for over 40 years, and has been stimulated by the Pandemic.

In 2022, sales are expected to stay the same. The Florida RV Super Show in Tampa, one of the largest in the country, drew more than 80,000 people last month, a new record.

'There's more planning involved'

There have been more headaches for some because of the increase in RV owners.

John Fisher, who travels across the country in his RV six months out of the year for various American Kennel Club events, said living on the road is a lot tougher than it used to be.

There is a large role played by rising prices. He is taking a hit on his wallet with the national average for diesel at nearly $4 a gallon, but it is not the only thing. Fisher upgraded his RV in July and said it was incredibly hard to find a model that fit his needs in his price range.

It is getting more and more expensive to buy an RV. He said that when he started looking, they were about $90,000 new and he picked up a used one for $60,000.

Standard hitch travel trailer values increased in the year 2021, according to a report from J.D. Power. The report notes that new and used supply still lags demand, and that buyers should expect strong pricing in the first quarter of 2022.

Increased demand has led to increased wait times at repair shops. Ken Allen, service director of Johnnie Walker RV in Las Vegas, said his business and others have struggled to keep up, but the growing list of customers has made wait times double.

He said that supply chain issues have made matters worse.

One of the air conditioner manufacturers stopped answering their phone about a year ago. He said they were so overwhelmed.

Fisher has been trying to get a window in his RV fixed since November, but has had no luck.

He said it would probably take less than an hour for them to fix it.

Rebecca French has been waiting for more than two weeks to get her travel trailer into an auto shop to fix her leaking tank.

She said that there are more people camping because they think it is cheaper.

Take your road trip to the next level in one of these camper vans or RV.

campgrounds are more expensive now that demand is through the roof, according to Thomas Croft, who has been RVing full-time for six years. A spot would cost between $10 and 15 dollars a night, depending on location. It has almost doubled.

A couple years ago, I would go to the campgrounds and there would be a million spots open. I can barely get a spot now. It has changed a lot. There is more planning involved.

Fisher said he had to plan out trips to keep costs down.

He said that it was a financial hassle and that he made his living on the road. I have to raise prices or rethink it. I am not sure if my customers will accept a price increase.

One of the reasons Rebecca French hasn't been able to travel as much in her RV is because of rising costs. She may downsize rather than give up her RV travel altogether.

French said that his truck gets about nine miles to the gallon, which has deterred him from doing what he wants to do.

'It's hard work'

In the early months of the Pandemic, the Goulds purchased a new Jayco Jay Flight out of boredom, but didn't realize how much work the RV required for each trip.

Gould said she and her family went hardly anywhere with the brand-new RV. There was one trip to a river in New Braunfels, Texas, where they hooked it up twice.

It did not go well.

Gould said that they had to stay five miles from the river.

The difficulties with controlling a RV didn't help the situation.

Gould said that they almost got a divorce to back it into the driveway. It is frightening.

Gould said they found a buyer online in four days.

My husband told me to just give him the payoff and that was it. She said that they gave everything they had bought for the RV.

Smith said finding a buyer was easy. After fixing up the RV, she was able to give it back to her, which was twice as much as her original purchase.

Some new RV owners will not regret their purchase. Many of the people he works with are only selling larger models.

We are seeing a higher return rate for first-time buyers, where they may have waited four to six years before buying their second RV. He said that the timeframe is shortening and that the used inventory has spiked.

Gould sold her RV last year but said she has no regrets and is considering buying another once she and her husband retire.

She said she would love to do it again.

How to rent an RV without getting ripped off is one of the RV travel tips.

'The shine came off once I bought it'

Smith said she is glad she was able to dip her toes in the RV world, but warns potential buyers to consider their options before making the purchase.

She said that the shine came off after she bought it. We can fly to them, stay in the parks, and drive to them in a comfortable car. We can rent an RV for less.

Gould suggests people buy rent first to get a feel for it.

Degenerative disc disease makes travel and sitting difficult for the older person. She said she was proud of the trips she was able to accomplish on her own.

She said she was thrilled when she parked her trailer right on the ocean. If you don't try, you will never know. Life is too short.
