Baugo school officials say that a teacher at Jimtown High School requested early retirement after he was captured on video hitting a student with enough force to cause visible injuries.

Baugo officials said in a press release Friday that the teacher, Mike Hosinski, is no longer with the school.

School officials said Friday that the incident had been referred to the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Baugo has complaints that prompt the removal of political materials from class.

Baugo schools states that any action that threatens to harm any student will be quickly addressed.

The attorney for Baugo Community Schools released the video after The Tribune requested it.

In the 44-second video, a student with a hood is seen entering the hallway with an adult behind him.

The adult jogs to catch up with the student, rounds a corner, and uses the student's backpack to force him into the wall.

There is no sound in the video where the adult wags his finger. The adult hits the student with such force that his head snaps back into the wall behind him.

The boy falls to the ground after the adult puts his hands on the student's shoulders in an attempt to get him to the hallway.

A woman who checks on a boy as he lies on the floor is one of several witnesses who appear at the end of the exchange.

Baugo officials said the teacher confronted the student about the hoodie he wore to class. The teacher struck the student in the face with an open-handed slap after a verbal exchange in the hallway.

The student, who has not been identified publicly, suffered visible injuries and the staff immediately provided treatment.

Baugo Community Schools' highest priority is the safety of students, and swift action must be taken to safeguard that. Anything less is not acceptable.

School officials reached out to licensing officials with the Indiana Department of Education, as well as contacting the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department and Department of Child Services.

In an email Monday, a spokeswoman for the department said confidentiality laws prevent them from commenting on the involvement of the department.

The Tribune left a message. There are no charges at this time, according to a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office.

Baugo school will offer support services to the student involved in the investigations.

A letter to Baugo families was sent Sunday clarifying Hosinski's status with the school after district officials said incorrect facts were shared on social media.

Baugo schools did not fire Hosinski, but he requested an early retirement.

Hosinski, a teacher for 40 years, requested in January to retire at the end of this school year, but submitted another request to leave immediately following Friday morning's incident, according to the district.

The Baugo school board is expected to vote on the teacher's request.

Baugo Community School employees are not allowed to be on school grounds while an investigation is taking place. He is not allowed to be on school premises until the investigations are complete.

The Tribune could not reach Hosinski. Messages have been left for the district's leader.

This is not the first time that Hosinski has been called into question as a teacher.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation will be the site of a complaint by the Northern Indiana Atheists over concerns the teacher promoted personal political views in his classroom.

Posters and stickers in a classroom had messages like "Choose life, your mom did" and "Liberalism is a mental disorder", according to photos obtained by the organization.

Hosinski told students in his class that Hillary and Obama are liars and that Donald Trump is great.

Some people are defending a teacher. A Change.org petition to save Mr. Mike Hosinski Tenure and Retirement had gathered more than 1,200 signatures by noon Monday.

The Jimtown High School social media post states that Hosinski was named the teacher of the year in 2020.

The school board in Baugo is expected to meet. The Educational Service Center is in the district.
