New York City Mayor Eric Adams told CNBC on Monday that he wants to encourage new business formation in the Big Apple.

The layers of bureaucracy that the Democratic Adams believes stand in the way of entrepreneurship in the nation.

I'm a compassionate capitalist. "I don't know what the heck happened to our country where the foundation of our existence has been on capitalism," Adams said.

Why are we apologizing for being capitalists? We are working hard. We should encourage new businesses to be here, but be compassionate in our actions.

Adams recently announced that the country's most populous city would lift its indoor vaccine requirement on March 7 if Covid cases continue to decrease. The nation's largest public school system is set to lift its mask mandate that day.

Adams thinks the removal of face- covering requirements will show that we are open. He said that they are ready to do business.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and the mayor are trying to remove homeless people from the subway. In the past year, there have been more violent incidents on the subway and around the city, including the death of a homeless man who was pushed into the path of a train.

Businesses have become more concerned about theft. Adams said that like with subway safety, being fearful needs to be put to an end.

Adams said that erosion must stop to be able to have a business.

Getting New Yorkers back to in-person work is one priority Adams has. If the Covid-era surge in remote work remains a long-term fixture, he expressed concerns about the economic future of the city's central business districts.

We need to see the financial system and we are in this together. Adams said that New York City runs on being in the office.
