mass production of a higher-capacity battery forTesla is planned by Panasonic. The company is making structural improvements to its Wakayama Factory and is building a production facility for the battery there.

The 4,680 battery is being developed. It is expected to be around twice the size of current batteries and have a fivefold increase in energy capacity. The batteries could boost the range of an EV by over 15 percent if fewer of them were required for each car.

Panasonic's announcement is consistent with previous reports that it could start making the battery next year. Around 700 million dollars was said to be invested by the company into production equipment. It started working on the battery after receiving a request fromTesla.
