The suspension of the Russia national team is being discussed by the world governing body.

It is working closely with the European confederation and it is expected a joint statement will be made later on Monday.

The country would not be able to face Poland in the World Cup play-off if the suspension is not lifted.

The original decision to stop short of suspending Russia was not final.

Q&A: What happens next?

How quickly can we make a decision?

Sky Sports News has a chief reporter.

I think that Russia will be banned from international football later today. The Russia national team will be suspended until further notice.

FIFA are working closely with UEFA on this. When the Bureau of the Council met on Sunday, they stopped short of banning Russia.

Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Lucy Powell says she fully supports the FA's suggestion Russia should be banned from international football

They said that Russia wouldn't be able to play any home games, they wouldn't be able to call themselves Russia, and they would have to call themselves the Football Union of Russia.

Further measures may well follow, according toFIFA. The measures are going to be very rapid.

Are other groups putting pressure on football's governing bodies to act?

The six presidents of the six football confederations are part of the FIFA Bureau. It was a global decision.

The decision was taken by the president of CON MEBOL, as well as the president of the Asian football confederation, and it was not just taken by Infantino. A lot of people thought they would suspend Russia after they decided to stop just short of it.

There has been a lot of criticism of that decision and we have also had examples where individual football associations have come out and said that we are not going to play against them.

We saw Poland, who have been the most vociferous and have been standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, saying that they will not play against Russia.

Even if we lose out on a place in the World Cup finals. Poland would get into the play-offs if this decision is made today.

The winner of the game against Russia will face the Czech Republic of Sweden for a place in the World Cup.

They would go into the final play-off game.

Has the decision surprised you?

It's surprising that it happened so quickly. We had information on Sunday that this wasn't a final decision.

It was clear to us that Russia may be suspended if there is a conflict in Ukraine. It was made very clear to us that this decision is not a foregone conclusion and that it would take time. It could change depending on what happens in Ukraine.

There was a lot of criticism not to ban Russia immediately, but it looks like people at the football world and the individual football associations are listening and are not going to play Russia.

Russia will play in the European Championship. Will the same thing be done by the same people?

I expect they will. The decision is going to be taken by all of the confederations.

There is going to be a meeting of the Executive Committee of the European Football Association at 5pm on Monday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says it is inconceivable that normal sporting relations with Vladimir Putin's Russia can continue following the invasion of Ukraine.

There will be more developments on that as well. At that meeting, it will be clear that Russia has been banned from international football. We may get an update on the attempts to extricate themselves from a sponsorship deal with the state-owned Russian energy company.

It's complicated and it's something the lawyers for the club are trying to find a way to get out of, because Gazprom is one of their biggest sponsors.

What would happen if Russia retreated from Ukraine? Is the national team allowed to play in the World Cup play-offs? Is this the reason why they are holding back?

I don't think we can say 100% that Russia won't play Poland. It depends on what happens in Ukraine.

There is an awful lot more important things happening in the world at the moment. When I speak to people at the Polish FA, I am struck by the fact that what is happening in Ukraine is more important than the World Cup play-offs.

Football does not matter in the grand scheme of things. They don't care about the World Cup finals. Football is insignificant. What is important is what Russia is doing.

They are saying they will try to stop that. Don't ask about the World Cup finals or the play-offs. They will not be playing against Russia.
