On the same day that Canada and Europe announced they would block their airspace to Russian airlines, Aeroflot violated a restriction on using Canadian airspace.
Transport Canada said late on Sunday that they were aware that Aeroflot Flight 111 violated the prohibition put in place on Russian flights using Canadian airspace. The flight from Miami to Moscow took off on Sunday. Transport Canada will investigate the actions of Aeroflot and Canada's air-traffic control service provider, Nav Canada.

There are no direct flights between Russia and Canada according to a representative for the Transport Minister.
The Canadian regulator said they would not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action and other measures to prevent future violations.
Aeroflot entered the Canadian airspace, according to Nav Canada. According to the report, the aircraft operator identified the flight as a humanitarian flight as it approached domestic airspace, which requires special handling by air traffic control under normal conditions.
Nav Canada said in a statement that they are cooperating with Transport Canada to investigate the occurrence, and are working with neighboring Air navigation service providers to support rerouting of aircraft prior to them entering Canadian-controlled airspace.

British airspace has barred Aeroflot from entering. Russian airlines will be barred from using Poland and the Czech Republic's airspace, as well as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
